The essay aims to give a contribution to a rethink of Thomas Babington Macaulay’s historical work, for a long time neglected by the Italian historio- graphy. At this purpose, the analysis of Macaulay’s interpretation of Church history contained in his famous and brilliant Essays and in his masterpiece, the History of England from the Accession of James II, in conjunction with the recent and complete edition of the Journals and the rereading of the cor- respondance, allow us to reconstruct the development and the stratification of his negative opinion of the catholicism, regarded by him as a sort of su- perstition spread among the masses by the currupted ecclesiastical hierar- chy. An impression renforced by a journey through Italy in 1838-’39 which seemed to influence his succeeding historical judgements. The image of the Catholic Church drawn by Macaulay is probably among the factors which facilitated the translation and the circulation of his books in Piedmont and in Tuscany before the Italian Risorgimento.
