Of Papirius Fabianus, a rhetor and philosopher who lived in the early imperial age and was one of Seneca’s teachers, we possess a few fragments from his philosophical works, mostly preserved by late-ancient grammarians. In this paper I examine in particular one of these fragments, transmitted in two rather different versions, and I argue that these differences are not due, as generally assumed, to textual corruption, but a comparison between the two version allows us to restore a slightly more complete form of the fragment.

Abstract

Of Papirius Fabianus, a rhetor and philosopher who lived in the early imperial age and was one of Seneca’s teachers, we possess a few fragments from his philosophical works, mostly preserved by late-ancient grammarians. In this paper I examine in particular one of these fragments, transmitted in two rather different versions, and I argue that these differences are not due, as generally assumed, to textual corruption, but a comparison between the two version allows us to restore a slightly more complete form of the fragment.
