Iord. Get. 44, a passage which includes the expression lacrimabile bellum, is a direct quotation of Verg. Aen. 7.604 and it is aimed at establishing a connection between the Gothic origins and Roman history. Lacrimabile bellum is also found in Get. 138, but this passage is taken from Epit. de Caes. 46.2 and therefore should not be considered when looking into Iordanes’ intertextual relationship with Vergil.
