The paper addresses the evolution of the issue of responsibility in the context of current societal transformations relsted to sustainability. It deals first with the meaning of responsibility, how some features of modern society affect it and the problem of collective responsibility. Subsequently, it elaborates on the evolution of the problematic in the last decades. Changing views about reality, its knowability, and how both impinge on purposeful action affect the configuration of responsibility, as it was established in modernity. The conclusion notes that these trends do not rule out traditional forms of responsibility and that new social norms are arguably forming, which may be conducive to more sustainable ways of living on the planet.
