Lo scriba di Ravenna e la prefettura del pretorio tardoantica

Among the documents issued by Cassiodorus as praetorian prefect (Variae, books XI and XII), there is a letter for the appointment of a scriba Ravennas. The analysis of the text, compared with further evidence, allows us to identify the scriba with a person in charge of the municipal archives, probably someone of a higher rank than the exceptores curiae. The fact that the prefect had exercised his appointment power in a field that fell outside his bureau is a significant element and it is here interpreted in the light of the changes that took place in the institutional and administrative framework of late antique Italy.

Tra i documenti emessi dalla prefettura del pretorio negli anni di Cassiodoro (Variae, libri XI e XII)c’è una lettera destinata alla nomina di uno scriba Ravennas. L’analisi di questo testo, confrontato con altre testimonianze, permette di identificare lo scriba con un responsabile dell’archivio municipale, probabilmente di rango superiore agli exceptores curiae. L’esercizio da parte del prefetto del potere di nomina in un ambito esterno al suo ufficio è un dato significativo, interpretato in questo contributo alla luce di una serie trasformazioni che investirono l’assetto istituzionale e amministrativo dell’Italia tardoantica.
