The text describes the field of study addressed in its main characters. Political ecology is an interdisciplinary field of study that has developed since the last decades of the 20th century and is of growing significance. It is fed by a variety of methods of inquiry and schools of thought, where ecomarxist, decolonial and ecofeminist perspectives assume salience alongside elements of the critical tradition. A common trait is the idea that a relationship of mutual influence exists between society and the biophysical world, requiring a joint approach to their respective dynamics and how they manifest themselves, from the planetary scale to that of the injustices and inequalities that mark specific collectivities and territories. Distinguishing itself as much from apolitical approaches to ecology as from the tradition of political studies that considers the environment simply the theater of human affairs, political ecology stands at the forefront of the study and search for solutions to the ecological crisis. This volume addresses the major issues in the limelight by entrusting them to leading authors in their fields of research. The first part of the volume frames the field from a historical and theoretical perspective. The second addresses a number of key concepts and issues. The third looks at crucial issues by applying the distinctive lens of political ecology.
