The article discusses musical imagery in the Heracles of Euripides. It argues that the stasima are all connected thematically and metrically. It also argues that the second stasimon alludes to the Homeric Hymn to Apollo, and in particular to the passage about the Delian Maidens. The allusion undercuts the chorus’ confidence in the possibility of honouring Heracles in song forever in Thebes. The allusion reveals that only Athens, the city that controls Delos, controls the songs about Heracles
