This paper examines how, between the end of the Hellenistic period and the beginning of the Imperial era in Athens, control over weights and measures shifted from exclusive oversight by metronomoi (and, to a lesser extent, sitophylakes) to a more complex system involving multiple magistracies. By analysing the available evidence, the study aims to shed light on the nature of this institutional overlap, reconstruct the distribution of responsibilities for metrological control, and identify moments of discontinuity in the evolution of these functions.

Abstract
This paper examines how, between the end of the Hellenistic period and the beginning of the Imperial era in Athens, control over weights and measures shifted from exclusive oversight by metronomoi (and, to a lesser extent, sitophylakes) to a more complex system involving multiple magistracies. By analysing the available evidence, the study aims to shed light on the nature of this institutional overlap, reconstruct the distribution of responsibilities for metrological control, and identify moments of discontinuity in the evolution of these functions.File in questo prodotto:
