This paper explores the sculptural tradition of Taras, starting from the contributions of ancient sculptors known through literary and epigraphic sources. It assesses the long-standing research approaches and their impact on key issues, such as the relationship with Greek traditions. The reappraisal of significant examples, particularly funerary reliefs, challenges established chronologies and stylistic attributions. By comparing Tarentine works with major artistic centres, such as Athens, the study proposes a refined framework for understanding Tarentine sculpture, emphasizing the early dating of some disputed specimens, such as the reliefs from Via Umbria. Moreover, the paper highlights the evolution of funerary monuments, including marble stelae and architectural reliefs from the naiskoi, and examines the blend of external influences and local innovation in sculptural production at Taranto.
