This essay offers an interpretation of an alternative, unpublished narrative of the events surrounding the death of Lancelot I, grandfather of the eponymous hero of the Lancelot-Grail cycle. This version is found in two fourteenth-century manuscripts, Paris, Arsenal, MS 3348 and New Haven, Beinecke Library, MS 227, both of which provide a rewriting of the last section of the Estoire del Saint Graal. Notably, this narrative includes an original, epic-style warrior excursion depicting Lancelot I's sons, Ban and Bohort, avenging their father's assassination by the Duke of Bellegarde. The analysis examines the application of feudal law, particularly through Philippe de Beaumanoir's Coutumes de Beauvaisis (1283), to assess whether the duke's actions constitute a legitimate action as an 'honour killing', while also exploring the concept of 'private war' in relation to the vengeance campaign led by Ban and Bohort.

Abstract
The analysis examines the application of feudal law, particularly through Philippe de Beaumanoir's Coutumes de Beauvaisis (1283), to assess whether the duke's actions constitute a legitimate action as an 'honour killing', while also exploring the concept of 'private war' in relation to the vengeance campaign led by Ban and Bohort.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
