This website Piazza dei Cavalieri. Una storia europea (https://piazzadeicavalieri.sns.it/) illustrates the historical, urban, architectural and artistic development of the Piazza dei Cavalieri in Pisa. It covers everything from the square’s medieval origins and the Medici-era renovation overseen by Giorgio Vasari to the Napoleonic era and the present day. The freely accessible entries are organised into several sections. The first section focuses on the square's buildings and monuments, providing in-depth information on their architectural history, function and the most significant exterior and interior features. Specific studies focus on paintings and sculptures of particular importance, either preserved in their original settings or displayed on the square's façades. The website also features short biographies of the key figures and artists who contributed to the square's development, as well as information on the main institutions that have been housed in its buildings (including the Scuola Normale Superiore). There is also a brief overview of significant historical events that have taken place in the square from the Middle Ages to the present day, alongside comments from European travellers who visited the square between the 15th and 19th centuries. Over 250 entries have been contributed to the site by more than thirty authors under the scientific supervision of Lucia Simonato, with bibliographical references accompanying each entry. The website is illustrated with around 1,000 images.
