Un foglio (anzi due) del giovane Verrocchio scultore agli Uffizi

A sheet in the Uffizi (38F), drawn on both sides with three sketches of half-length Madonnas and Child, has for more than a century been the subject of debate in the specialist literature, oscillating between attributions to Desiderio da Settignano and Antonio Rossellino. While confirming that it is the work of a Florentine sculptor active shortly around 1460, the author here proposes its reassignment to Andrea del Verrocchio. This attribution is consistent with the revisions made over the past three decades or so to the catalogues of all three masters, as well as with recent scholarship on Verrocchio as a painter. A second sheet in the Uffizi, containing studies of five putti (40F) and traditionally associated with 38F, is omitted from the present discussion for reasons of space.

Un foglio degli Uffizi (38F), disegnato su entrambe le facce con tre schizzi di Madonne a mezza figura col Bambino, è disputato da più di un secolo, all’interno della bibliografia specialistica, tra un’attribuzione a Desiderio da Settignano e una ad Antonio Rossellino. Nel confermare la sua spettanza alla mano di uno scultore fiorentino attivo intorno al 1460, l’autore propone qui una restituzione ad Andrea del Verrocchio, coerente con gli aggiustamenti intervenuti nel corso degli ultimi tre decenni circa all’interno dei cataloghi dei tre maestri, oltreché negli studi su Verrocchio pittore. Un secondo foglio degli Uffizi, con studî di cinque putti (40F), tradizionalmente connesso al 38F, viene escluso dalla trattazione per mancanza di spazio.
