This paper presents the preliminary results of a preventive archaeology project which has been carried out at the Abela barrack (‘Caserma Abela’), at the southern tip of the island of Ortygia, Syracuse. As part of extensive archaeological excavations in the central courtyard of the barrack, the focus of the paper is addressed to trench 8 and, in particular, to pit D, whose archaeological fill dates to the Archaic Greek period. After examining the stratigraphic sequence and the most remarkable findings from a typological and functional point of view, the contribution provides some insights on the nature and function of this new context, opening up new perspective for future research.
