The essay is centered on Torquato Tasso’s marginalia in the Latin trans- lation and commentary of Plato’s Opera Omnia by Marsilio Ficino. Tasso’s copy, printed in Basel by Froben in 1539, is currently stored in the Vatican Apostolic Library (Stamp. Barb. Cr. Tass. 46). Particu- larly the marginalia on Plato’s Symposium and Ficino’s Commentarium in Convivium provide valuable insight into Tasso’s distinctive annota- tion method, characterized by multiple readings of the same material. Through a few examples, this study aims to illustrate how Tasso uti- lized the annotated volume as a significant scholarly resource to extract and incorporate content into his own literary and theoretical works.
