The Estoire del Saint Graal is, from a diegetic perspective, the opening text in the cycle of six Old French prose romances known as the Lancelot-Graal. This widely circulated cycle encompasses the entire narrative arc of the Arthurian world, up to the death of Arthur. The Estoire del Saint Graal, in particular, drawing on events already told in Robert de Boron’s Joseph, presents the origins of the Grail in the Holy Land and its transmission to what would later become Arthurian Britain. Little is known about the context of the romance’s composition, which can be dated to the early decades of the thirteenth century, and about the genesis of the cycle. The romance is preserved in forty-eight manuscripts, dating from the thirteenth to the early sixteenth century, as well as in a considerable number of fragments. By the third decade of the sixteenth century, it had been the subject of two printed editions. The textual tradition is characterized by the widespread presence of textual reworking of varying nature and extent, which are not always easy to classify. The first part of the thesis offers a critical analysis of the existing scholarship on the text of the Estoire. Among these, the largely unpublished work of Jean-Paul Ponceau is particularly noteworthy. A second part proposes, as an initial experiment toward an analysis to be extended to a larger portion of the text, an examination of variants identified through the collation of two loci. While taking into account the entire manuscript tradition, the collation focuses primarily on witnesses generally attributed to the so-called version longue. The variants discussed are those for which the direction of textual innovation can be estabilished; for each of them, a judgment is offered regarding their significance for reconstructing the relationships among the manuscripts. The final part of the thesis presents the study and edition of a previously unedited alternative ending of the romance, preserved in two fourteenth-century manuscript (Paris, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, 3348, and New Haven, Beinecke Library, MS 227). This ending focuses in particular on the final events of the lineage of Celidoine (ancestor of the hero, Lancelot, who gives the cycle its name), and intersects with passages that have textual and thematic parallels in other romances of the cycle.
