This thesis offers a critical edition of Bernardo Ilicino’s Espositione ai Triumphi di Petrarca, a commentary composed in the late 1460s and dedicated to Borso d’Este. Despite the wide circulation of the Espositione in manuscript and print, the work has never been the object of a comprehensive philological investigation. The present study aims to fill this gap by combining historical contextualization, textual criticism, and close analysis of Ilicino’s exegetical method. The Introduction reconstructs the cultural, political, and intellectual background of the Espositione, situating it within the milieu of Sienese humanism and the Ferrara court. Particular attention is paid to Ilicino’s authorial strategy, his relationship with the Este family, and the circumstances that affected the transmission and reception of the commentary. The Nota al testo constitutes the philological core of the thesis. It provides a complete census and description of the surviving witnesses, analyzes the dynamics of the textual tradition, and reconstructs the stages of transmission. Through a systematic comparison of the manuscripts and early printed editions, the study identifies families of witnesses, evaluates their reciprocal relationships, and assesses the degree of authorial control over the diffusion of the text. The chapter Il testo dei Trionfi nell’Espositione examines the Petrarchan text as transmitted by Ilicino, highlighting variants, adaptations, and interpretative interventions. The version of the Triumphi transmitted and commented on by Ilicino represents a hybridized form of the poem, corresponding to group III.B in Appel’s classification (Die Triumphe, 1901). The Criteri di edizione briefly outline the editorial principles adopted in the establishment of the text. The thesis finally provides a critical edition of the Espositione, based on manuscript Alpha.H.3.2 of the Biblioteca Estense of Modena, accompanied by a commentary on sources documenting Ilicino’s quotations and intertextual references.
