The aim of this article is to show the relevance of the meditation on religion in the Renaissance period. This analysis revolves around the theses advanced by Pomponazzi, Machiavelli, Bruno and Sarpi, which are examined in their affinities and divergences. Special attention is devoted to the ‘Machiavellian paradigm’, as elaborated by Machiavelli in his Discourses on Livy, and in particular in the chapters on the religion of the Romans.
