In October 1934, returning from the 32nd Eucharistic Congress held in Buenos Aires, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli was received by the Brazilian government in Rio de Janeiro. Though brief the visit stressed an important phase of cooperation between the Brazilian Republic and the Holy See. This paper offers a framing of Church and State relations in Brazil during Getúlio Vargas’ presidency (1930-1945). It also places Cardinal Pacelli’s speeches during his mission in Latin America in the general policy of pope Pius XI regarding politics and religion.
