In 1924 three apostolic visitors were sent to Brazil by Pope Pius XI to investigate the state of the Brazilian Church. The reports presented by the visitors at the end of their mission offer a description of the local Church and make a portrait of the Brazilian clergy. Some reports did also cover the cultural dimension by reflecting on the effects of immigration and slavery over religion. This paper intends to highlight the link established by the apostolic visitors between Catholicism and social transformation in Brazil.
