Lupus in fabula: Sulla vera mano di Lupo di Ferrières

The paper aims to question the attribution to Lupus of Ferrières of the wellknown hand which is found, among others, in mss. Bern, Burgerbibliothek, 366 and London, BL, Harley 2736. Despite the common belief, there is no evidence that this is Lupus’ hand. Two autograph subscriptions of the abbot survive (Paris, AN, K//13, 4/3 and 10/2), which have not been studied in detail yet. These subscriptions prove with no doubt that Lupus’ hand is not the one traditionally attributed to him. A closer study of ms. Città del Vaticano, Vat. Lat. 474 (in which one of Lupus’ pupils wrote the note «Hucusque ab abbate et praeceptore Lupo requisitum et distinctum est») and of ms. Paris, BnF, Latin 6370, mentioned by Lupus in one of his letters, leads the author to identify a new hand: indeed, the comparison with the two autograph subscriptions demonstrates that this new hand is to be seen precisely as that of Lupus.
