The paper completely describes the structure of algebraic subgroups of G_m^n which meet a given subvariety in a variety of unlikely dimension. In particular this yields the function field case of a conjecture by Zilber. Another application is to a proof of a sharpening of a conjecture of Schinzel on common zeros of lacunary equations.
