«Que’ due lettori (forse voleva dire attori)» : Madame de Staël, Leopardi e la traduzione ‘perfetta’

This paper examines the theme of translation in the classical-romantic debate, starting from an interpretative issue in Madame de Staël’s second letter to the Biblioteca Italiana. The passage where the writer theorises that it is impossible to produce a perfect translation – considering the unbridgeable distance between the memory of the author and the translator’s one – includes indeed a translation’s mistake. Once the error is found, it is possible to restore the original meaning of this text’s metaphor by discovering its source. This case study will shed light on the problem of the perfect translation in Madame de Staël and Leopardi.

Il contributo prende in esame il tema della traduzione nel contesto del dibattito classico-romantico, a partire da un problema interpretativo nella seconda lettera di Madame de Staël alla Biblioteca Italiana. Proprio il brano in cui la scrittrice teorizza l’impossibilità di produrre una completa trasposizione di idee da una lingua all’altra – a causa dell’incolmabile distanza tra la memoria dell’autore e quella del suo interprete – sembra infatti essere stato vittima di un errore di traduzione. Una volta trovato l’errore, è possibile restituire senso a una importante metafora del testo, individuandone la fonte. Questo caso studio consentirà alcune riflessioni sulla questione della perfetta traduzione in Madame de Staël e Leopardi.
