Nota ad Auson. epigr. 87, 12-13

This paper discusses the hitherto proposed interpretations of the use of the letters ΟΥ (possibly as the ligature ᴕ) in Auson. epigr. 87, 12, in a poem which describes cunnilingus and teacher Eunus’ activity by means of the Greek alphabet. After highlighting the difficulties of Adams’ hypothesis that the symbol indicates bull horns, it is suggested that ΟΥ be explained as the ‘philological’ abbreviation of οὕτως, in line with the use of Θ (l. 13), both text-critical sign and symbol of death.

L’articolo discute le interpretazioni finora avanzate dell’uso delle lettere ΟΥ (forse come legatura ᴕ) in Auson. epigr. 87, 12, in un componimento che descrive l’attività di Euno, cunnilingus e maestro, attraverso l’alfabeto greco. Evidenziate le difficoltà dell’ipotesi di Adams, secondo cui il simbolo indicherebbe le corna del toro, si propone di spiegare ΟΥ come abbreviazione ‘filologica’ per οὕτως, coerentemente con l’impiego di Θ (v. 13), insieme segno critico e simbolo di morte.
