The article addresses the issue of the relationship between the civic envoy and the law. Starting from Plato's thought, it identifies the perspective with which the legislator looked at the problem of diplomatic contact with the outside world and the measures the city had to put in place to regulate it. The second part of the work analyses the rules known in the Greek world relating to the various stages of the envoy's activity, from his appointment to the final account and possible honours.
