his paper aims to re-examine on a technical basis the issue of the lost attributes of the famous marble statue of Nikandre, dedicated on the island of Delos in 650-625 BCE (Athens, National Archaeological Museum 1). The intention here is to make a new contribution by linking this statue to the archaeological evidence found in a number of Greek sanctuaries, namely bronze flowers pertaining to statues. A reexamination of both the iconography problem, and the identity of the figure will be carried out, since the debate is still open as to whether the statue is a representation of a goddess or a wealthy woman. According to the analysis presented here, the statue of Nikandre could have held a flower and a crown, as a possible representation of the dedicator. These two floral symbols of youth and marriage were linked to the inscription, which qualified Nikandre as kore (girl) and alochos (wife), thus making it likely that the statue celebrated her wedding.

Abstract

his paper aims to re-examine on a technical basis the issue of the lost attributes of the famous marble statue of Nikandre, dedicated on the island of Delos in 650-625 BCE (Athens, National Archaeological Museum 1).
