Prohibition of Grazing in a Decree from Herakleia. An Autopsy Review of IG XII.7 509

IG XII.7 509 is a stele kept in the Archaeological Museum of Amorgos and is the only known inscription from Herakleia. The text preserves the last part of a decree aimed at prohibiting the introduction and breeding of goats on the island. The paper includes a revision of the text after autopsy, translation, commentary and a photograph of the inscription. The question of the precise political status of Herakleia has not been the subject of in-depth discussion until very recently and it is worthy of further investigation. The question is addressed on the basis of some useful details. Furthermore, the restorations proposed for ll. 1-2 are reconsidered and a new one is proposed for l. 18.

IG XII.7 509, conservata presso il Museo Archeologico di Amorgos, è l’unica iscrizione nota di Herakleia. Si tratta di una stele su cui è incisa la parte finale di un decreto che intende vietare l’introduzione e l’allevamento di capre nell’isola. Nell’elaborato, redatto dopo autopsia, si presentano revisione, traduzione, commento e una foto dell’iscrizione. Il problema del preciso statuto politico di Herakleia è stato ancora affrontato in maniera puntuale solo recentissimamente e merita comunque un approfondimento. Si individuano alcuni elementi utili per ragionare su di esso. Inoltre, si riconsiderano le integrazioni proposte per le ll. 1-2 e se ne suggerisce una nuova per l. 18.
