The article focuses on a still overlooked marble statue representing Bacchus, from the collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, currently housed at Villa Corsini in Castello. After a first section dedicated to the analysis of the sculpture and its comparison with a neglected drawing by Pierre Jacques, which reproduces the statue with the note “la Valle”, the article sheds new light on the sculpture’s collecting history, from Rome to Florence. Unlike what was previously hypothesized, the statue did not pass through Villa Medici: thanks to the results of new archival investigations, it can now be reasonably stated that the Bacchus arrived in Florence following a purchase by Jacopo di Alamanno Salviati, who in all likelihood bought it from the art dealer Giovanni Antonio Stampa between 1572-77 and 1586.
