Una ‘Madonna’ donatelliana da restaurare, a Terranuova Bracciolini

The parish church of Santa Lucia in Cicogna, a small village near Terranuova Bracciolini (Arezzo), has housed a half-figure of the ‘Madonna and Child’, possibly moulded in terracruda and originally intended for domestic devotion, since 1614 at the latest, as the ‘icon’ of one of its secondary altars. Covered over time by several layers of paint, the work will have to wait for an expert restoration before it can be attributed with any certainty. However, the particular characteristics of the invention, undocumented in other ‘Madonnas’ of the same genre, strongly point towards Donatello in the early 1420s. If restoration confirmed both this authorship and the use of terracruda, it would be the only surviving work by Donatello made in this material, as well as an important addition to the corpus of the artist’s early ‘Madonnas’.

La chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Lucia presso la Cicogna, frazione di Terranuova Bracciolini (Arezzo), custodisce fin dal 1614 al più tardi, quale 'icona' di un suo altare secondario, una mezza figura della 'Madonna col Bambino' plasmata forse in terracruda e destinata in origine alla devozione domestica. Ricoperta nel tempo da più strati di pittura, l'opera dovrà attendere un esperto restauro prima di poter essere attribuita con piena confidenza. Ma i caratteri particolari dell'invenzione, non documentati da altre 'Madonne' dello stesso genere, indirizzano fortemente verso Donatello, nei primi anni venti del Quattrocento. Se il restauro confermasse sia tale paternità che l'impiego della terracruda, si tratterebbe dell'unica opera sopravvissuta di Donatello in questa materia, oltreché di un'aggiunta comunque importante al corpus delle 'Madonne' giovanili del maestro.
