This paper reconsiders the relationship between πλάζω and πλήσσω in ancient grammatical treatises and modern dictionaries starting from Sapph. fr. 37 N. The paper is divided into three sections: in the first (§ 1) the textual framework and sources of the fragment are presented. The second (§ 2) discusses the ancient theory that interprets ἐπιπλάζοντα, in v. 2 of the fragment, as an aeolic form for ἐπιπλήσσοντα. This theory has been followed in all major modern editions and translations, but it poses some linguistic and interpretative problems. This section will also consider some passages in which, according to some modern dictionaries, πλάζω is employed as a synonym for πλήσσω. A closer analysis highlights the limits of this interpretation. In the third part, a new interpretation of fr. 37 N. of Sappho is proposed (§ 3). This also allows to reconsider the problem of the union of the two parts of the fragment (vv. 1 and 2-3), transmitted from separate sources but united since Bergk’s 1882 edition.

Abstract
1 and 2-3), transmitted from separate sources but united since Bergk’s 1882 edition.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
