Carved by the leading sculptors based in Rome and placed in its Cathedral, the Lateran Apostles represent the main artistic enterprise of the pontificate of Clement XI (1700-1721). It is well known that, to achieve this magnificent (and expensive) decoration, cardinals, bishops and catholic princes were asked by the pope to pay for the colossal statues. A special committee, led by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili, supervised every stage of the enterprise (1702-1718). Unpublished documents found in the Vatican Apostolic Library shed light on the early stages of the commission, identifying the patrons initially involved and ascertaining the difficulties in choosing the first group of sculptors as well as the early negotiations for the purchase and delivery of the marble from Carrara.

Abstract
Carved by the leading sculptors based in Rome and placed in its Cathedral, the Lateran Apostles represent the main artistic enterprise of the pontificate of Clement XI (1700-1721). It is well known that, to achieve this magnificent (and expensive) decoration, cardinals, bishops and catholic princes were asked by the pope to pay for the colossal statues. A special committee, led by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili, supervised every stage of the enterprise (1702-1718). Unpublished documents found in the Vatican Apostolic Library shed light on the early stages of the commission, identifying the patrons initially involved and ascertaining the difficulties in choosing the first group of sculptors as well as the early negotiations for the purchase and delivery of the marble from Carrara.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
