The paper focuses on the relationships between the history of the Italian language and the historiographical methodology referred to as Microhistory that developed in Italy at the end of the 20th Century and which subsequently became widespread. During the last two decades, various studies of the Italian language have been dedicated to research into historical sources such as archival documents, judicial documents and private correspondence in order to reconstruct the evolution of the history of the language spoken by the lower classes, i.e., independently of the history of the literary language. Nevertheless, this attention and sensitivity to documentary sources could be further enhanced by reconsideration of some research methods and issues in the light of the recent historiographical debate on Microhistory.
