The article discusses the use of the term ἐφόδιον in literary and epigraphic sources, the earliest evidence of travel allowances, the ways in which they were defined, and the institutions and procedures involved. It highlights how this allowance was used both for specific missions and for members of supranational bodies, and how, in the Hellenistic/Ro- man period, it gradually evolved into a form of euergetism by citizens towards the community.
