Drawing from previously unpublished archive material, this essay examines Salvo’s (Salvatore Mangione, 1947-2015) mail exchanges with international conceptual artists between 1969 and 1971. It opens with his 1969 letter to gallerist Gian Enzo Sperone and its international reach, then analyses postcards Salvo received from Sol LeWitt, Douglas Huebler, Jan Dibbets, and Robert Barry. After reconstructing the strategies of self-representation and communication enacted by Salvo in his mailings, the essay’s final paragraph relates them to the contemporary practices of the Italian artist Alighiero Boetti, a close friend. In conclusion, what emerges is Salvo’s original practice of ironic subversion of the postal strategies of conceptual art.

After reconstructing the strategies of self-representation and communication enacted by Salvo in his mailings, the essay’s final paragraph relates them to the contemporary practices of the Italian artist Alighiero Boetti, a close friend. In conclusion, what emerges is Salvo’s original practice of ironic subversion of the postal strategies of conceptual art.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
