This paper analyses Andrea Prencipe’s Università generativa as a theoretical framework for reinterpreting the role, functions, and future trajectories of academic libraries within contemporary higher education. Drawing on the model’s two core concepts, engagement and educability, and its three strategic dimensions (internationalisation, interdisciplinarity, and innovation), the article highlights how these elements delineate a shared conceptual ground between Prencipe’s proposal and the ongoing transformation of academic library systems. Traditionally understood as repositories or support services, academic libraries are reframed as epistemic and socio-technical infrastructures: environments for knowledge co-production, lifelong and self-directed learning, and nodes connecting research, teaching, local communities, and scholarly communication networks. By examining established practices — including open science, research data management (RDM), information literacy, support for the third mission and public engagement, inclusive services, and the development of hybrid physical-digital learning spaces — the paper demonstrates how academic libraries inherently embody a generative logic, fostering critical thinking, information practices, and the capacity to navigate complexity. In this perspective, academic libraries emerge as potential strategic agents of institutional transformation, enabling curiosity, interdisciplinarity, innovation, and processes of unlearning and relearning, and thus contributing to the development of a generative university ecosystem. At the same time, the paper identifies a structural tension between potential generativity and its actual implementation, linked to professional and organisational constraints. Academic libraries are therefore interpreted not only as key enablers of change, but also as critical sites for testing the feasibility of the generative university model, insofar as they support critical inquiry, interdisciplinarity, and continuous learning within evolving knowledge infrastructures.

Abstract
Academic libraries are therefore interpreted not only as key enablers of change, but also as critical sites for testing the feasibility of the generative university model, insofar as they support critical inquiry, interdisciplinarity, and continuous learning within evolving knowledge infrastructures.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
