The manuscript Paris, BnF, it. 1097, copied around the mid-15th century, contains part of the corpus of the poet Aurelio Simmaco de Iacobitti from Tossicia (Abruzzo). Probably once in the possession of Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo, Prince of Taranto, before its entry into the Aragonese library in Naples, the codex is of particular interest as the sole extant witness of two vernacular adaptations of classical texts, most notably a "Batrachomyomachia" in ottava rima (1456), the earliest known Italo-Romance translation of the pseudo-Homeric poem. Although two editions of these translations, both by Marcello Marinucci (2001 and 2004), are available, many aspects of the manuscript still require clarification before a new complete critical edition can be produced. This article provides both a revised description of the manuscript and a summary of the available information on the author and his work. It also seeks to outline the most prominent pending issues related to the codex and to offer further reflections on its early collecting history – particularly in support of Benedetto Croce’s hypothesis of Orsini ownership – as well as on the marginalia found alongside several texts in this remarkable anthology.
