La terrazza inferiore del complesso monumentale del vallone orientale (SAS 3/30). La campagna di scavo 2022: nuovi dati e problemi aperti

The results of the 2022 excavations in the lower terrace ofthe urban Thesmophorion, are presented. The investigations were carried out both in the area destined for votive offerings of the Proto-Hellenistic age and in the neighbouring area intended for meal preparation and con-sumption. Excavation also continued at the major ‘basin’ (see NotScASNP2022, for a small circular tank), pending an intervention aimed at defining the nature of the fill. The presence of earlier phases of use of this terrace has also been verified, although it is still difficult to say whether they were meant for sacred or residential use. New data still strongly indicate that the monumental complex is increasingly delineated as an urban sanctuary of chthonic deities, characterised by ritual expressions quite different from those known for the suburban Thesmophorion of Contrada Petraro.

Si presentano i risultati degli scavi 2022 nella  terrazza inferiore del Thesmophorion urbano. Le indagini sono state condotte sia nell'area  destinata alle offerte votive di età proto-ellenistica, sia in quella limitrofa destinata alle  attività di preparazione e consumo dei pasti. Lo scavo è proseguito anche presso la ‘vasca’  maggiore (cfr. NotScASNP 2022, per una piccola vasca circolare), in attesa di un intervento  volto a definire la natura del riempimento. È stata verificata anche la presenza di fasi  precedenti di utilizzo di questa terrazza, ma è ancora difficile dire se siano riferibili a un uso  sacro o residenziale. I nuovi dati indicano comunque con forza che il complesso  monumentale si delinea sempre più come un santuario urbano di divinità ctonie, caratterizzato da espressioni rituali ben diverse da quelle note per il Thesmophorion suburbano di Contrada Petraro.
