Written by Pirandello in the spring of 1922, Vestire gli ignudi had its theatrical debut with Maria Melato and her company on 14 November of that same year and was first published in book form in March 1923 (Bemporad). To date, no scripts have emerged from that period that can shed light on the revisions the playwright may have made to the text during its theatrical run; the period was indeed marked by a heated dispute with Adelaide Bernardini, who together with Luigi Capuana had inspired the events of this ‘true-story’ play. However, an analysis of the American translation, Naked, published in December 1923 (E. P. Dutton & Co. Inc.), reveals that the latter was not rendered from the Italian princeps after all – as its chronology would lead one to believe – but rather from an earlier version of the script containing scenes and lines that had not yet been cut or altered. &rough the translation it is thus possible to indirectly reconstruct the first draft of Vestire gli ignudi and to follow its developments on the stage.
