This paper aims to demonstrate how the history of performance can be reconstructed even in urban contexts lacking a strong literary tradition, by drawing on fiscal sources. At the heart of this study are the fiscal records of the Municipality of Avignon, preserved in the municipal archives, which serve as the primary documentation for reconstructing Cesare Borgia's solemn entry into the city in 1498. This event occurred during Borgia’s journey to deliver to King Louis XII the papal dispensation annulling his marriage to Joan of Valois. These fiscal documents offer crucial evidence of an event of particular importance to the Avignon community, which invested significantly in ceremonial activities that exceeded its economic means. The duke’s arrival was perceived as an opportunity to strengthen ties with both the papacy and the Kingdom of France. The proposed analysis sheds light on the complex social and economic networks that surrounded the spectacle: from the individuals involved and the locations used, to the payments recorded for the construction of festive structures. As such, the event emerges not only as a moment of celebration, but also as a vivid expression of the city’s political, social, and economic vitality.
