In line 2 of Aeneid's book 1, Virgilian manuscripts and indirect witnesses are divided between the readings 'Laviniaque' and 'Lavinaque'. In discussing this textual problem, philologists and Virgilian editors have inexplicably neglected the earliest quotation of the passage, found in Quintilian, Institutio oratoria 11.3.37, who reads 'Lavinaque' and therefore supplies a strong argument in favour of that reading.
