In this paper I have tried to point out the epistemological paradigm of German Classical Philology, as it has been worked out by Wilamowitz and later redefined by his follower Werner Jaeger, have had a pivotal role in Leo Spitzer's approach to his own work as a romanistic philologue. As a final aim of this enquiry, I try to elighten the implicit dialogue (via Wilamowitz-Jaeger) between Leo Spitzer's idea of 'classical harmony' - as it has been worked out in Spitzer's last and posthumous book, "Classical and Christian Idea of World Harmony" - and Nietzsche's "Die Geburt der Tragoedie".
