Abstract

This article will focus its analysis on the iconographic material (paintings, newspaper illustrations, caricatures) on the issue of Jews and Judaism at the crucial moment of the Emancipation era, during the period of Italian Risorgimento. This analysis, intertwined with the study of the strategies of use of anti-jewish stereotypes (the moneylender, the wandering jew etc..), leads to a reconstruction of the visual history of anti-jewish culture in Italy during the XIX and XX centuries, underlining the role played by the catholic tradition in the evolution toward modern anti-Semitic representations.
