This paper is focused on the specific trend of Vichian studies represented by the confrontation between Vico and Cassirer. Both of them, despite their historical distance, are considered as thinkers that share the theoretical claim to challenge the supremacy of scientific knowledge in favor of the deeper dimension of mythical thinking. My purpose is to discuss, first, how Cassirer betrays mythical thinking by elaborating the primacy of the Function. Secondly I argue that, in developing the New Science, Vico elaborates a relationship between facts and principles that is irriducibile to the primacy of the logical dimension.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the specific trend of Vichian studies represented by the confrontation between Vico and Cassirer. Both of them, despite their historical distance, are considered as thinkers that share the theoretical claim to challenge the supremacy of scientific knowledge in favor of the deeper dimension of mythical thinking. My purpose is to discuss, first, how Cassirer betrays mythical thinking by elaborating the primacy of the Function. Secondly I argue that, in developing the New Science, Vico elaborates a relationship between facts and principles that is irriducibile to the primacy of the logical dimension.
