Deep multicycle X-ray surveys offer an unique opportunity to study the variability of intermedi-ate and high redshift AGNs. I will present results obtained from XMM and Chandra campaigns on the CDFs showing that variability can be employed to trace AGN properties and accretion history of high-z sources, provided that the effects of sparse sampling and low statistics are properly taken into account. I will also discuss the expectations for AGN variability studies with future large-area/wide-field X-ray missions based on recent simulations.

Abstract
Deep multicycle X-ray surveys offer an unique opportunity to study the variability of intermedi-ate and high redshift AGNs. I will present results obtained from XMM and Chandra campaigns on the CDFs showing that variability can be employed to trace AGN properties and accretion history of high-z sources, provided that the effects of sparse sampling and low statistics are properly taken into account. I will also discuss the expectations for AGN variability studies with future large-area/wide-field X-ray missions based on recent simulations.File in questo prodotto:
