The aim of this article is to reconsider a well-known passage of Arams' Phaeno- mena and its Latin translations. The analysis deals with the texts by Cicero, Varro of Atax, Virgil and Avienius, and focuses particularly on a lexical problem of Cicero's Aratea, consisting in the explanation of the word mollipes. Virgil's rewriting of Aratus in the first book of Georgics is then discussed in detail in order to demonstrate the presence of a "window reference" so far undiscovered, which may shed light on Avienius' version of the meteorological sign examined in the present paper.
