This article focuses on the literary background which shaped the characterization of the Egyptians in Juvenal’s 15th satire, particularly with regards to Lucretius’ model. The textual analysis reveals how the satire was directly influenced by Lucretius’ description of primitive men (Lucr. 5, 925 ff.), which was interwoven with other literary models in order to satirically enhance the primitive traits of a barbaric people contemporary of the poet.
