Leonardo Bruni’s official Epistolary has come down to us in two different textual forms, consisting, respectively, of eight and nine books of letters. Scholars have long debated which one of them should be deemed to reflect the author’s final will and, therefore, should constitute the textual basis of a critical edition. This essay proposes a careful analysis of the common text between these two versions (books I-VIII), so as to investigate the possible presence of even minor textual changes, that may be held to go back to the author’s final review of his own letters. The comparison, which is based on the direct collation of 56 manuscripts of Bruni’s Epistolary, aims at defining the archetype’s evolution through the two textual forms, thereby establishing their stemmatic relation.

Abstract
Leonardo Bruni’s official Epistolary has come down to us in two different textual forms, consisting, respectively, of eight and nine books of letters. Scholars have long debated which one of them should be deemed to reflect the author’s final will and, therefore, should constitute the textual basis of a critical edition. This essay proposes a careful analysis of the common text between these two versions (books I-VIII), so as to investigate the possible presence of even minor textual changes, that may be held to go back to the author’s final review of his own letters. The comparison, which is based on the direct collation of 56 manuscripts of Bruni’s Epistolary, aims at defining the archetype’s evolution through the two textual forms, thereby establishing their stemmatic relation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
