In this article, I offer a philological analysis of an epic fragment transmitted by a Pindaric scholion, in which Herakles reports an exploit by Telamon in their expedition against the Amazons. In the first section, I approach issues of diction, attribution and content, and investigate the mythographical background of the fragment. In the second part, I suggest a supplement for the lacuna in the text of the scholiast, as postulated by Drachmann, and adduce a second previously overlooked testimonium (Tzetzes Lyc. 1327, almost certainly drawing on the Pindaric scholion).

Abstract

In this article, I offer a philological analysis of an epic fragment transmitted by a Pindaric scholion, in which Herakles reports an exploit by Telamon in their expedition against the Amazons. In the first section, I approach issues of diction, attribution and content, and investigate the mythographical background of the fragment. In the second part, I suggest a supplement for the lacuna in the text of the scholiast, as postulated by Drachmann, and adduce a second previously overlooked testimonium (Tzetzes Lyc. 1327, almost certainly drawing on the Pindaric scholion).
