Herein, we wish to report new data that DHICA possesses efficient hydrogen donor properties, Fe(III) reducing power and OH radical-scavenging efficiency in Fenton processes and show for the first time that the main circulating DHICA metabolite, 6H5MICA, exhibits an antioxidant activity comparable to that of DHICA. We propose that DHICA and 6H5MICA may provide a missing key toward an understanding of the physiological signifi- cance of Dct and melanogenesis beyond the mere provision of a pigment.
