This paper aims to offer a better understanding of the the Gothic War’s second phase by investigating Gothic diplomacy during the reign of Totila. After the conquest of Rome (546), the king sent at least three embassies to Justinian and formed an alliance with the Franks, while at the same time he probably persuaded the Slavs to invade the Balkans. Totila subordinated his military strategy to his diplomatic activity, which was both a source of legitimization and a way to reach a compromise with the Empire, thereby obtaining Justinian’s recognition.
