The political investment on animal resources compelled modern society to a general valorisation of the figure of the animal. Animal's moral issues have not been excluded from this process. Veterinary schools on one hand, and scientific societies that had the opportunity of studying animals alive at the zoological garden in Paris on the other, represent two major institutions which, faced to problems such as disease and captivity, developed a first discourse on animal well-being.

Abstract

The political investment on animal resources compelled modern society to a general valorisation of the figure of the animal. Animal's moral issues have not been excluded from this process. Veterinary schools on one hand, and scientific societies that had the opportunity of studying animals alive at the zoological garden in Paris on the other, represent two major institutions which, faced to problems such as disease and captivity, developed a first discourse on animal well-being.
